This figure probably dates to 1850-1860. He was a sculptor in Prussia and the only tobacconist carver to consider himself a true artist. Because he lived and worked in Detroit, he was the only carver to actually hire real Indians to pose for the figures. The elongation, cross hatching, extensive carving and attention to detail are signature traits. Melchers carvings are the rarest of all tobacconist figures.
