Vered Gersztenkorn
Contemporary artist, Born in Israel 1964, Living in Israel

With no formal training in art, I am a self- taught artist. As a teenager, I observed works by painters I loved, Toulouse de Lautrec, Modigliani, Matisse, Picasso and more, finding myself actually copying some of their works, and by doing so, teaching myself how to paint. Whenever I had the chance to paint a live model, I would do so. When I moved to Tel Aviv, I was naturally exposed to the local art and artists, although I remained an "outsider".

Traveling to Tahiti (French Polynesia) in 1990 greatly affected me and my art. I was immediately absorbed in the beauty and magic of the place, and my paintings looked like a colorful “fiesta”, influenced by the colorful surroundings.

Coming back to Israel, I was introduced to a great Israeli abstract painter, Lea Nikel (1918-2005), who has had a major influence on my work (to this day), and for the next 11 years I only painted abstract.

The change came when I discovered Jean Dubuffet's work and L'Art Brut, as well as outsider's art. Their language spoke to me. These unspoiled, direct and childlike, yet sophisticated, paintings where very appealing and stimulating. It lead me to introduced characters, animals and still life, into my abstract work, while sometimes separating the abstract from the figurative.

I tend to be guided by "fortuitous happenstance", following my intuition and imagination, never knowing in advance what I'm going to paint. In this way, I create an “adventure” for myself that always seems new and challenging.

In abstract and figurative work, I deal with the essence of my inner world in relation to the surroundings, remaining on the edge of "getting lost", regaining control of, and coherence in my work, is where I find balance, through an intuitive navigation.

My work has been presented in solo and group shows in many galleries, as well as added to the collections of galleries and private collectors, in Israel, Europe and the USA.
